STRIKE LOOMS IN GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS IN ANAMBRA STATE

MEDICAL AND DENTAL CONSULTANTS' ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (MDCAN) CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU TEACHING HOSPITAL, AMAKU-AWKA ISSUES A 7 DAY ULTIMATUM TO THE GOVERNMENT OF ANAMBRA STATE

Wednesday 30th October 2019 the chairman of the association Dr Chukwudi Okani gave the warning at a press briefing after an emergency meeting of the group.
The chairman said that the association may commence indefinite strike if the State  government do not heed the call.
The Chairman and his team expressed dismay at the higher salaries being earned  by House Officers in Federal Medical Centres (FMC) across the South - Eastern States of Nigeria whilst medical consultants at Amaku were paid much lower salaries.
According to Dr. Okani, he has been a consultant for over 6 years but his salary is nothing compared to that being earned by House Officers in FMCs in the South East of Nigeria.
He further explained that the ultimatum given to the State Government by the Association had become necessary because the State Government of Anambra has so far failed to implement the agreement reached between both parties sometime in June 2018. Part of the agreement reached with the State Government after the 2018 strike was that the salary paid Consultants at the hospital should be at par with that paid Consultants in Teaching Hospitals.
Lending his voice on the matter, Dr. Amaechi Nwachukwu emphasised that the Association is not asking for a salary increase. Rather they are asking for equity and fairness to the extent that their salary should be same as that paid Consultants in other hospitals.
Dr. Donald Eneh and Abuja based medical practitioner is of the view that except there is some form of denial of remuneration, it would be an abberation for a House Officer to earn more than a Consultant in a hospital. He stated that salaries and allowances of medical doctors are graded according to levels.
Difference between an House Officer and a Consultant.
Whereas a Consultant is a senior doctor who has overall responsibility for the care of patients in a hospital, a  House Officer is a qualified doctor practising under supervision in a hospital in the first year after graduation from medical school.
